b Jesus actually said to his opponents: “Break down this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” (John 2:19-22) But as John points out, Jesus was referring, not to the temple in Jerusalem, but to “the temple of his body.” Jesus was thus comparing his anticipated death and resurrection to the demolition and reconstruction of a building.​—Compare Matthew 16:21.
