a A footnote in this magazine explained: “The expression ‘third man’ was coined in October 1966, by a French Jesuit named François Roustang, in the magazine ‘Christus.’ This expression was quickly adopted around the earth because it describes a world-wide phenomenon throughout the Catholic Church.”
