Footnote

b In the Murdock decision, the Supreme Court reversed its own position in the case of Jones v. City of Opelika. In the Jones case, in 1942, the Supreme Court had upheld the decision of a lower court that had convicted Rosco Jones, one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, of engaging in distribution of literature on the streets of Opelika, Alabama, without the payment of a license tax.
