Some time ago, Mordecai became the guardian of the Jewish orphan girl Hadassah, whose name means “myrtle.” Otherwise known as Esther (meaning “fresh myrtle”), she is the daughter of Mordecai’s deceased uncle Abihail.

Esther does not reveal that she is a Jewess, thus complying with the instructions of her older cousin Mordecai.
