In the United States, for instance, a family of Mexican-Americans may follow the crops across the country, working in the fields as each crop ripens. Though they work long hours, the entire family, all together, may not make as much money as a plumber’s apprentice. Some live so close to starvation that to miss a day’s work would mean to go without eating—the threat of poverty is real to them.
