    • As a lad I had taken violin lessons for two years. So, upon coming to Bethel, I volunteered to play in the orchestra that practiced two evenings a week and broadcast on Sunday mornings over the Society’s radio station WBBR. Finding out that a cellist was needed, I bought a cello and began taking music lessons.a By 1927 ten of us were invited to play full time over the Society’s station on Staten Island. That was the beginning of my musical privileges that have continued through the years.

      The orchestra’s stay on Staten Island lasted for only two and a half years. Then we were transferred to Brooklyn where a new radio studio had been built. After I had played in the orchestra for some ten more years, it was disbanded, and I again began working in the factory,
