Later that same year, on November 17, 1989, a student uprising erupted in Prague. The Communist regime reacted with brutal force, sending special police units to disperse the demonstrators at Prague’s Národní třída (National Avenue). This led to a spontaneous peaceful protest movement against the Communist government. It was later referred to as the Velvet Revolution.
