    • a Proper names are broken into syllables, each syllable being separated by a dot or an accent mark. The emphasis is placed on the syllable marked by the accent. If the syllable ends in a vowel, the vowel is given its long sound. If a syllable ends in a consonant, the vowel is given its short sound.
