GUI 121 We Need Self-Control
Ya Ki-Gaa-Ziɛ Yowũi Yee Maazu Ɣale Ɣɛ Le?
“A mɛ lɛ ɓe ba faa yowũ na gaa-ɓaa ɔ́ ɣɛ saa lɔtɔi maazu é wo ma ɔ́ kɛ wo laa zei bu ga wo nu ɓuse yii-ma ŋɛniitiɛ te mawõi leve ɓɔɔ ma.”—LOO. 6:12
WHAT THE MAIN POINT?
To help us (1) fight discouragement and (2) learn how to overcome temptation.
1. Gaamai ta ɣa ga zɛɓɛ e vile nu ɓɔgapɛ ba?
YOU na ever feel like doing something that Jehovah not like? If so, don’t be discourage because everybody going through the same thing too. The Bible say: “No temptation has come upon you except what is common to men.” (1 Cor. 10:13)a This one mean that any wrong desire you fighting with, other people fighting with it too. So just know that Jehovah can help you to overcome it.
2. Tɛ-ga taniga ta ga zɛɓɛ ya wo ga Kolai Maa Vea taniga e vɛɛ niitiɛ va te Gala Kɔlɔi maa woli zu? (Wɛlɛ ɓalaa footeitiɛ va.)
2 The Bible also say: “Each one is tried by being drawn out and enticed by his own desire.” (Jas. 1:14) This verse help us to see that everybody can’t face the same temptation. For example, some people can face the temptation to put their hand in man and woman business that against God will, like man loving to man or woman loving to woman. Sometime, some people who na stop looking at naked people picture or video can still want look at it again. And plenty people who na stop taking drugs or drinking plenty liquor can face the same problem too. That just some of the thing dem here that some Christians and Bible student dem fighting with. And some kindna way, all of us na feel like the way the apostle Paul wor feeling. He say: “When I wish to do what is right, what is bad is present with me.”—Rom. 7:21.
We can face temptation anytime and anywhere (See paragraph 2)d
3. Zɛɓɛi ki-gaa-ziɛ yowũi ɣa kɛ ga nu?
3 If you na stay long fighting with any wrong desire, sometime you can feel that you not get any strength, and it can be just like you not able to overcome that temptation. You can also feel that you not get hope, and it can be just like Jehovah not happy with you just because you fighting with that wrong desire. But that way of thinking not correct! To explain why we say it not correct, this article will answer two questions: (1) Who want you to think like that? (2) How you can overcome wrong desires?
“TUƁO-VELE YOWŨ NUI” WÕINI DE ƔI-GAA-ZIƐ ƔƐ LE?
4. (a) Zɛɓɛi e kɛɛ Seeta wõini de ɣi-gaa-ziɛ ga gaa-ɓaa lɛ de ya? (b) Ɓɛɛ ɣa ya gaa-ɓaa ʋe de ya ga de tɛ-gai yee maazu ɣale?
4 Satan want us to think that we not able to overcome temptation. Jesus knew this one. So when he wor teaching his disciple dem to pray he say: “don’t allow us to fall in temptation, but save us from Satan.” (Matt. 6:13) Satan say that human being will not obey Jehovah when they face temptation. (Job 2:4, 5) Why Satan feel like that? Because he hisself allow his wrong desire to overcome him and he not remain faithful to Jehovah. So, he believe that we just like him, that we will not remain faithful to Jehovah anytime we face temptation. Satan wor even thinking that temptation wor coming overcome God perfect Son! (Matt. 4:8, 9) But you think we not really able to overcome wrong desires? Yes, we able to overcome it! We agree with the apostle Paul who say: “For all things I have the strength through the one who gives me power.”—Phil. 4:13.
5. Da kwɛ̃ɛ ɣɛ le ga Jehova laavɛ la ga da ki-gaa-ziɛ yowũi yee maazu ɣale?
5 Jehovah not looking like Satan. Jehovah trust us that we able to overcome wrong desires. How we know that one? Because Jehovah say that plenty people who remain faithful will survive the great tribulation. Think about what this one mean. Jehovah, who can’t lie, say that plenty people who will enter paradise, will be people who “washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” That mean, Jehovah look at them to be clean. (Rev. 7:9, 13, 14) So it clear that Jehovah know that we able to overcome wrong desires.
6-7. Zɛɓɛi e kɛɛ Seeta wõini de ɣi-gaa-ziɛ ga gaa-ɓaa lɛ de ya ga de tɛ-ga yee maazu ɣale?
6 Satan also want us to feel that we not get hope. He want us to feel that Jehovah not happy with us just because we fighting with wrong desires. Why Satan want us to feel like that? That because he hisself not get hope. Jehovah already na judge him that he will not get everlasting life. (Gen. 3:15; Rev. 20:10) So, Satan want us to feel the same way too. But we not looking like him, we get hope to live forever. In fact, the Bible say that Jehovah want help us so we can live forever. It say: He “does not desire anyone to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance.”—2 Pet. 3:9.
7 So, if we believe that we not get hope or that we not able to overcome wrong desires, we will be thinking the way Satan want us to think. When we understand this one good-good, we will do our best to not let Satan win.—1 Pet. 5:8, 9.
FAA YOWŨ ƔƐƐ ƲAI ƔA KƐ DE ƔI-GAA-ZIƐ ƔƐ LE?
8. E wulo niitiɛ wulu da kɛ, zɛɓɛi wɔnɔ e de ɣɛɛ ga faa yɔwũ ɣɛɛ vea? (Psalm 51:5) (Wɛlɛ ɓalaa “Expression Explained.”)
8 Beside Satan, something else can make us to feel that we not get hope and that we not able to overcome wrong desires. That wetin? That the sin that all of us get from our first parents.b—Job 14:4; read Psalm 51:5.
9-10. (a) Faa yowũi nii Adã ɓɔga Iivi te kɛɛni e faa vɛɛni ɣɛ le ta ŋeteai va? (Wɛlɛ ɓalaa footei va.) (b) Faa yowũi Adã ɓɔga Iivi te kɛɛni towa faa vɛɛ de va ɣɛ le?
9 Just think on how sin affect Adam and Eve. After they disobey Jehovah, they hide theirself and try to cover their body. The book Insight on the Scriptures, talk something about what they do. It say: “Sin make them to feel guilty, worry, scare, and shame.” It wor not possible for Adam and Eve to get close friendship with Jehovah again. No matter what they wor coming do, they wor always coming feel guilty, worry, scare, and shame because they wor not perfect again.
10 That true, we not in the same situation that Adam and Eve wor in. Why? That because the ransom not apply to them. But for us, Jehovah can forgive our sins because of the ransom and we can get clean conscience. (1 Cor. 6:11) But still, we get sin from Adam and Eve. So that the reason why we ourself too can feel guilty, worry, scare, and shame. In fact, the Bible say that sin continue to control human being. And it even controlling “those who [have] not sinned in the same way that Adam transgressed.” (Rom. 5:14) Even though we wor born with sin, we must not feel that we not get hope and that we not able to overcome wrong desires. So wetin we can do for this feeling to not overcome us?
Sin make Adam and Eve to feel guilty, worry, scare, and shame (See paragraph 9)
11. Zɛɓɛi e kɛɛ lɛ vani ga dɔ ɣi-gaa-ziɛ ga gaa-ɓaa lɛ de ya, tɔwɔ zɛɓɛ ʋaa ma? (Loomɛitiɛ 6:12)
11 Because we not perfect, sometime we can feel that we not able to overcome wrong desires. It can be just like something inside us telling us that we will never be able to overcome wrong desires. But we must not listen to it. Why? Because the Bible say that we must not let sin to continue to “rule as king” over us. (Read Romans 6:12.) This one mean that we can decide to not let wrong desires to control us. (Gal. 5:16) Jehovah trust us that we able to overcome temptation. If he wor not having that trust in us, he wor not coming tell us to do it. (Deut. 30:11-14; Rom. 6:6; 1 Thess. 4:3) So it clear that we able to overcome wrong desires.
12. Zɛɓɛi e kɛɛ ɛ lɛ ʋize woni ga dɔ ɣi-gaa-ziɛ ga ki-to gɛ lɛ de ya, tɔwɔ zɛɓɛ ʋaa ma?
12 That the same way it can be when we feel that we not get hope. It can be just like Jehovah not happy with us because we fighting to overcome wrong desires. When it happen like that we must look at it just like that something inside us “talking,” and we must not listen to it. Why? Because the Bible say that Jehovah know that we not perfect. (Ps. 103:13, 14) He know everything about us and the different-different ways that sin can affect each of us. (1 John 3:19, 20) So long we continue to fight to overcome wrong desires, Jehovah will look at us to be clean. Why we can be sure about this one?
13-14. Ani ki-gaa-ziɛ yowũi ɣa ɣɛna nu ma, na ɣa yɛ kɛ ɛ lɛ Jehova yii-mai ɣɛɛ? Yɛpɛ e vile ba.
13 The Bible tell us the difference between having wrong desire and doing it. We not always able to stop ourself from having wrong desire but we able to stop ourself from doing it. For example, way back before some people in the Corinthian Congregation become Christians, they use to be gay or lesbian. Paul say: “That is what some of you were.” You think this one mean that they never use to be having that wrong desire again? We can’t say so, because they wor inside it for long time before they become Christian. But Jehovah wor happy with the Christian dem who control their wrong desire and not do it. He look at them to be “washed clean.” (1 Cor. 6:9-11)
14 That the same way it looking today. No matter what kindna wrong desire you fighting with, you able to overcome it. Even if you not able to stop thinking about it altogether, you able to control it and stop yourself from “carrying out the will of the flesh and of [your] thoughts.” (Eph. 2:3) So what some thing dem you can do to help you overcome wrong desires?
YA KI-GAA-ZIƐ YOWŨI YEE MAAZU ƔALE ƔƐ LE?
15. Ga de ki-gaa-ziɛ yowũi yee maazu ɣale, zɛɓɛi maa nɛɛ de pɛɛ ɣibɛ?
15 To overcome wrong desires, you need to be honest with yourself and know your weak point. Don’t fool yourself with “false reasoning.” (Jas. 1:22) For example, somebody who get problem with drinking plenty liquor will say, ‘But other people can drink more than me.’ Or somebody who get problem with looking at naked people pictures or videos will blame their wife and say, ‘If my wife wor coming show me more love, I wor not coming be looking at this kindna thing dem.’ So accept it when you do the wrong thing and don’t try to give excuse.—Gal. 6:7.
16. Ya leve ɣɛ le e lo kpãa ani tɛ-ga ɣa wona ga yiɛ?
16 Beside knowing your weak point, you must also fight hard to not let it overcome you. (1 Cor. 9:26, 27; 1 Thess. 4:4; 1 Pet. 1:15, 16) Try to know wetin can make you to want do that wrong thing and when you can feel like doing it. Maybe that certain kindna temptation or that certain time of the day you can really face that temptation. For example, maybe that in the night or when you tire? Prepare yourself and decide what you will do when you face the temptation. The best time to do this one here, that before you face the temptation.—Prov. 22:3.
17. Zɛɓɛi da maa woli Zoosɛ na po-kɔ̃ɔ-mai zu? (Genesis 39:7-9) (Wɛlɛ ɓalaa footeitiɛ va.)
17 Think about what Joseph do when Potiphar wife try to force him to sleep with her. He not waste time, right on the spot he tell her no. (Read Genesis 39:7-9.) Wetin this one show? Joseph already knew that it wor wrong to lay down with another man wife even before Potiphar wife try to force him to lay down with her. That the same way you can prepare yourself and decide what to do even before you face the temptation. Like that, when you face the temptation it will be more easy for you to do the thing that you already na decide to do.
Like Joseph, be quick to say no to temptation! (See paragraph 17)
YIƐ ƁƆƆ ZU-WƆ̃Ɔ
18. Zɛɓɛi ya ɓɔ de va ga de ki-gaa-ziɛ yowũi yee maazu ɣale? (2 Kɔlĩitiɛ 13:5)
18 To overcome wrong desire, you must “keep testing” yourself. That mean, you must continue checking yourself all the time to see how you doing. (Read 2 Corinthians 13:5.) From time to time, try to look at the thing dem you being thinking on and the thing dem you being doing and see if you need to work on anything. For example, even if you wor able to overcome certain temptation, you can still ask yourself this question here: ‘How long it take for me to say no?’ If you feel that you waste time to say no, don’t be discourage. But think about what you can do to improve the next time. Also ask yourself question dem like: ‘When wrong thinking come in my head, wetin I can do to take it from there quick-quick? The thing dem I can enjoy myself with, making it hard for me to overcome temptation? If I see rude-rude pictures or video, I can take my eye from there quick-quick? I understand that obeying Jehovah that the best thing for me even if it mean that I need to control myself?’—Ps. 101:3.
19. Ani da deʋe yowũ wona, na ɣa kɛ na ɓaa ɣɛ le ga de ki-gaa-ziɛ yowũitiɛ yee maazu ɣale?
19 It not good to give excuse for any wrong behavior. The Bible say: “The heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate.” (Jer. 17:9) Jesus say that it can make us to get “wicked thinking.” (Matt. 15:19) For example, let say somebody use to look at naked people picture or video and they stop. But maybe after some time, the person will start thinking that nothing wrong with looking at picture or video that can make people to get feeling to do man and woman business. They feel like that because the people not naked inside. Or maybe he will start thinking, ‘Nothing wrong with thinking about wrong thing so long I not doing it.’ When somebody start thinking like that it mean their heart “planning ahead for the desires of the flesh.” (Rom. 13:14) How you can stop thinking like that? Know and avoid making small-small wrong decisions. When you do it, it will help you to avoid making big decisions that will cause serious problem for you.c Don’t allow any “wicked thinking,” that will make you to give excuse for your wrong behavior.
20. Ki-to sɛɓɛi e de ya ŋinaa ŋeteai ʋaa ma, na ɣa ɣɛɛna kpɔba zɛɓɛi da maa zɔlɔwo siɛgi nii ma?
20 From what we na learn, we able to overcome temptation by Jehovah help. Also, we want tell him thank you plenty for feeling sorry for us and giving us the hope to get everlasting life in the new world. We will be happy because during that time we will be free to serve Jehovah and we will not be fighting to overcome any wrong desire again! But until that time reach, we can be sure that we get hope and that we able to overcome wrong desire. And with Jehovah help, we able to do it!
GUI 122 Be Steadfast, Immovable!
a The International Standard Version translate this verse like this: “No temptation has overtaken you that is unusual for human beings.”
b MEANING FOR SOME WORDS: In the Bible, most of the time the word “sin” can mean to do something wrong like stealing, adultery, or killing. (Ex. 20:13-15; 1 Cor. 6:18) But in some verse dem, “sin” can mean the condition that we get from Adam and Eve that we can be born with, even though we not do anything wrong yet.
c Note that the young man Proverbs 7:7-23 talk about, make some small-small wrong decisions before he make big-big wrong decision that make him to put his hand in boyfriend and girlfriend business.
