ATHENS—IMPORTANT CITY FOR OLDEN DAYS

For old time, Acropolis for Athens na place wey hard for enemies to attack. People start to write the history of Athens after 700 B.C.E. and the Acropolis don dey before that time. Athens come be the number one city for the full area of Attica, and e big reach about 250,000 hectares of land, and mountains and sea dey around-am. E be like say them get the name of the city from Athena—the woman god of the city.

Around 600 B.C.E., Solon wey be government person for Athens, change some important things for the government, laws, and business matter for the city. This things wey e change help poor people and help start the kind government wey them de call democracy. And as plenty of the people for the city na slaves, them no fit vote or get position for this kind government.

After Greek people win Persia around 480 B.C.E., Athens come be the capital of one government wey de rule some areas, so boats for business, de travel from Athens go far place like Italy and Sicily for west, and Cyprus and Syria for east. When things de really go well for Athens, many of the best artists, theaters, philosophers, writers, and scientist for the world, dey for Athens. Buildings and temples wey people fit go, full the city. The place wey high pass for the city na Acropolis hill. Them build one big temple ontop-am. Them use gold and ivory make image of Athena wey tall reach 12m and e dey the temple.

Sparta people first fight Athens and win them. Then, Macedonia still come fight and win them. After, Rome still fight and win them, and them carry all the better things for the city. But, for apostle Paul time, them still de look Athens as important city because of how e be before. In fact, Rome no ever put-am join the places wey them de control, instead them allow them to rule theirself, and say make them no pay tax. Even though say things no go well for Athens as before, them still get plenty universities, and people wey get money well-well de send their children go school for there.

People wey de follow Epicurus na Epicureans and People wey de follow Zeno na Stoics. This two group of philosophers no believe the same things and no believe resurrection.

Epicureans believe say many gods dey, but say the gods no care about people and no go reward people or punish people. So prayer and sacrifice no get use. Them believe say na happiness dey important pass for life, them no care about wetin good or bad. But them talk say make person no overdo things, to avoid problem. Them believe say the only reason why to know things dey important be say, e go help person stop to fear the gods, death, and things like that.

Stoics believe say god no be person, but na force wey no fit think or get feelings. And say everything for heaven and earth, even the human soul na part of that god. Some Stoics believe say, the soul together with heaven and earth go end one day. But other Stoics believe say last-last, the soul go be part of that god again. Stoics believe say when person de follow the laws wey de guide heaven and earth, e go de happy.
