Isazi esithile esingumKatolika sabhala: “Amakhathekizimu amaningi anyatheliswa izikhungo zezifunda zababhishobhi zamakhathekizimu aphaphalaza kakhulu, agcwele izimfundiso ezingenakuphikiswa ezingamaphutha futhi ayeqisa.” Nokho abelokhu esetshenziswa iminyaka eminingi ekufundiseni amaKatolika athembekile. Incwadi yamaKatolika i-Civiltà Cattolica yaphawula ukuthi lelikhathekizimu elisha liyonikeza “usizo olubalulekile ekuqinisekiseni ubunye bokholo,” obuye bazanyazanyiswa emashumini eminyaka amuva. Upapa ngokwakhe wathi: “Akulula ukubona ukuthi yiziphi izinguquko ezizolethwa yilelikhathekizimu. Ingabe ngempela lokho kuyoba njalo? Ingabe lelikhathekizimu lingakuhlanganisa ukwehlukana kwamaKatolika? Lokhu kwehlukana kuye kwaba sobala kakhulu endleleni amaKatolika asabela ngayo emhlabeni wonke ezimpikiswaneni ezinjengokukhishwa kwesisu, ukuvimbela inzalo, imfundiso yenkululeko engokwenkolo, nokuhlanganyela ezimpini ezibizwa ngokuthi ezokulunga (ngisho nalapho ziba nomphumela wokuba amaKatolika abulale amaKatolika). Ngokwezinga eliphakeme, inzondo nokwehlukana bekulokhu kufufusa phakathi kwe-Opus Dei manje esinamandla, esekelwa upapa namalungu amaningi anethonya esigungu sabefundisi, namaJesuit, manje angasathandwa upapa.
Ingabe lelikhathekizimu liyozishintsha izinhliziyo nokuziphatha kwezinkulungwane zabaholi bezombangazwe nabezamabhizinisi base-Italy muva nje abahileleke ekonakaleni nasemahlazweni? Lencwadi iyokuthinta ngokujule kangakanani ngempela ukuziphatha kwesigaba esiphakeme esibusayo e-Italy? Uma ihluleka ukushintsha indlela yokuziphatha yesigaba esibusayo, kungani kufanele imthonye umKatolika ovamile? Njengoba lomqulu unamakhasi angu-450—futhi ukufunda kungewona umsebenzi othandwa kakhulu ngabaningi—ingabe lingalindelwa ithonya elihlala njalo ekuziphatheni?
