To the Hebrews

1 Πολυμερῶς In many parts καὶ and πολυτρόπως in many manners πάλαι of old ὁ the θεὸς God λαλήσας having spoken τοῖς to the πατράσιν fathers ἐν in τοῖς the προφήταις prophets 2 ἐπ’ upon ἐσχάτου last [part] τῶν of the ἡμερῶν days τούτων these ἐλάλησεν he spoke ἡμῖν to us ἐν in υἱῷ, Son, ὃν whom ἔθηκεν he put κληρονόμον heir πάντων, of all (things), δι’ through οὗ whom καὶ also ἐποίησεν he made τοὺς the αἰῶνας· ages; 3 ὃς who ὢν being ἀπαύγασμα beaming forth from τῆς of the δόξης glory καὶ and χαρακτὴρ impress τῆς of the ὑποστάσεως sub-standing αὐτοῦ, of him, φέρων bearing τε and τὰ the πάντα all (things) τῷ to the ῥήματι saying τῆς of the δυνάμεως power αὐτοῦ, of him, καθαρισμὸν cleansing τῶν of the ἁμαρτιῶν sins ποιησάμενος having made ἐκάθισεν he sat down ἐν in δεξιᾷ right [hand] τῆς of the μεγαλωσύνης greatness ἐν in ὑψηλοῖς, lofty [places], 4 τοσούτῳ to so much κρείττων better γενόμενος having become τῶν of the ἀγγέλων angels ὅσῳ to how much διαφορώτερον more differing παρ’ beside αὐτοὺς them κεκληρονόμηκεν he has inherited ὄνομα. name.

5 Τίνι To which one γὰρ for εἶπέν he said ποτε sometime τῶν of the ἀγγέλων angels Υἱός Son μου of me εἶ are σύ, you, ἐγὼ I σήμερον today γεγέννηκά I have generated σε, you, καὶ and πάλιν again ᾿Εγὼ I ἔσομαι shall be αὐτῷ to him εἰς into πατέρα, Father, καὶ and αὐτὸς he ἔσται will be μοι to me εἰς into υἱόν; Son? 6 ὅταν Whenever δὲ but πάλιν again εἰσαγάγῃ he should lead in τὸν the πρωτότοκον Firstborn (one) εἰς into τὴν the οἰκουμένην, being inhabited [earth], λέγει he is saying Καὶ And προσκυνησάτωσαν let do obeisance toward αὐτῷ him πάντες all ἄγγελοι angels θεοῦ. of God.

7 καὶ And πρὸς toward μὲν indeed τοὺς the ἀγγέλους angels λέγει he is saying Ὁ the (one) ποιῶν making τοὺς the ἀγγέλους angels αὐτοῦ of him πνεύματα, spirits, καὶ and τοὺς the λειτουργοὺς public workers αὐτοῦ of him πυρὸς of fire φλόγα· flame; 8 πρὸς toward δὲ but τὸν the υἱόν Son Ὁ The θρόνος throne σου of you ὁ the θεὸς God εἰς into τὸν the αἰῶνα age τοῦ of the αἰῶνος, age, καὶ and ἡ the ῥάβδος staff τῆς of the εὐθύτητος straightness ῥάβδος staff τῆς of the βασιλείας kingdom αὐτοῦ. of him. 9 ἠγάπησας You loved δικαιοσύνην righteousness καὶ and ἐμίσησας you hated ἀνομίαν· lawlessness; διὰ through τοῦτο this ἔχρισέν anointed σε you ὁ the θεός, God, ὁ the θεός God σου, of you, ἔλαιον oil ἀγαλλιάσεως of exultation παρὰ beside τοὺς the μετόχους partners σου· of you; 10 καί and Σὺ You κατ’ according to ἀρχάς, beginnings, κύριε, Lord, τὴν the γῆν earth ἐθεμελίωσας, you founded, καὶ and ἔργα works τῶν of the χειρῶν hands σού of you εἰσιν are οἱ the οὐρανοί· heavens; 11 αὐτοὶ they ἀπολοῦνται, will destroy themselves, σὺ you δὲ but διαμένεις· you are remaining through; καὶ and πάντες all ὡς as ἱμάτιον outer garment παλαιωθήσονται, will be made old, 12 καὶ and ὡσεὶ as if περιβόλαιον thing thrown about ἑλίξεις you will wrap up αὐτούς, them, ὡς as ἱμάτιον outer garment καὶ and ἀλλαγήσονται· they will be altered; σὺ you δὲ but ὁ the αὐτὸς very (one) εἶ, are, καὶ and τὰ the ἔτη years σου of you οὐκ not ἐκλείψουσιν. will leave out.

13 πρὸς Toward τίνα which one δὲ but τῶν of the ἀγγέλων angels εἴρηκέν has he said ποτε sometime Κάθου Sit you ἐκ out of δεξιῶν right [parts] μου of me ἕως until ἂν likely θῶ I might put τοὺς the ἐχθρούς enemies σου of you ὑποπόδιον footstool τῶν of the ποδῶν feet σου; of you? 14 οὐχὶ Not πάντες all εἰσὶν they are λειτουργικὰ publicly working πνεύματα spirits εἰς into διακονίαν service ἀποστελλόμενα being sent forth διὰ through τοὺς the (ones) μέλλοντας being about κληρονομεῖν to be inheriting σωτηρίαν; salvation?

2 Διὰ Through τοῦτο this δεῖ it is binding περισσοτέρως more abundantly προσέχειν to be having [mind] toward ἡμᾶς us τοῖς to the (things) ἀκουσθεῖσιν, having been heard, μή not ποτε sometime παραρυῶμεν. we might be made to flow beside. 2 εἰ If γὰρ for ὁ the δι’ through ἀγγέλων angels λαληθεὶς having been spoken λόγος word ἐγένετο became βέβαιος, stable, καὶ and πᾶσα every παράβασις transgression καὶ and παρακοὴ disobedience ἔλαβεν received ἔνδικον agreeable to justice μισθαποδοσίαν, paying back of reward, 3 πῶς how ἡμεῖς we ἐκφευξόμεθα shall we flee out τηλικαύτης of so great ἀμελήσαντες having been unconcerned σωτηρίας, of salvation, ἥτις, which, ἀρχὴν beginning λαβοῦσα having received λαλεῖσθαι to be being spoken διὰ through τοῦ the κυρίου, Lord, ὑπὸ by τῶν the (ones) ἀκουσάντων having heard εἰς into ἡμᾶς us ἐβεβαιώθη, was stabilized, 4 συνεπιμαρτυροῦντος of (one) jointly bearing witness upon τοῦ of the θεοῦ God σημείοις to signs τε and καὶ and τέρασιν to portents καὶ and ποικίλαις to various δυνάμεσιν powers καὶ and πνεύματος of spirit ἁγίου holy μερισμοῖς to distributions κατὰ according to τὴν the αὐτοῦ of him θέλησιν; will?

5 Οὐ Not γὰρ for ἀγγέλοις to angels ὑπέταξεν he subjected τὴν the οἰκουμένην being inhabited [earth] τὴν the (one) μέλλουσαν, being about (to come), περὶ about ἧς which λαλοῦμεν· we are speaking; 6 διεμαρτύρατο he bore thorough witness δέ but πού somewhere τις someone λέγων saying Τί What ἐστιν is ἄνθρωπος man ὅτι that μιμνήσκῃ you are remembering αὐτοῦ, of him, ἢ or υἱὸς son ἀνθρώπου of man ὅτι that ἐπισκέπτῃ you are looking upon αὐτόν; him? 7 ἠλάττωσας You made less αὐτὸν him βραχύ short τι something παρ’ beside ἀγγέλους, angels, δόξῃ to glory καὶ and τιμῇ to honor ἐστεφάνωσας you crowned αὐτόν, him, καὶ and κατέστησας you set down αὐτὸν him ἐπὶ upon τὰ the ἔργα works τῶν of the χειρῶν hands σου, of you, 8 πάντα all (things) ὑπέταξας you subjected ὑποκάτω down under τῶν the ποδῶν feet αὐτοῦ· of him; ἐν in τῷ the γὰρ for ὑποτάξαι to subject αὐτῷ to him τὰ the πάντα all (things) οὐδὲν nothing ἀφῆκεν he let go off αὐτῷ to him ἀνυπότακτον. unsubjected. νῦν Now δὲ but οὔπω not as yet ὁρῶμεν we are seeing αὐτῷ to him τὰ the πάντα all (things) ὑποτεταγμένα· having been subjected; 9 τὸν the δὲ but βραχύ short τι something παρ’ beside ἀγγέλους angels ἠλαττωμένον having been made less βλέπομεν we are looking at Ἰησοῦν Jesus διὰ through τὸ the πάθημα suffering τοῦ of the θανάτου death δόξῃ to glory καὶ and τιμῇ to honor ἐστεφανωμένον, having been crowned, ὅπως so that χάριτι to undeserved kindness θεοῦ of God ὑπὲρ over παντὸς every [man] γεύσηται he might taste θανάτου. of death.

10 Ἔπρεπεν It was fitting γὰρ for αὐτῷ, to him, δι’ through ὃν whom τὰ the πάντα all (things) καὶ and δι’ through οὗ whom τὰ the πάντα, all (things), πολλοὺς many υἱοὺς sons εἰς into δόξαν glory ἀγαγόντα having led τὸν the ἀρχηγὸν Chief Leader τῆς of the σωτηρίας salvation αὐτῶν of them διὰ through παθημάτων sufferings τελειῶσαι. to perfect. 11 ὅ The (one) τε and γὰρ for ἁγιάζων sanctifying καὶ and οἱ the (ones) ἁγιαζόμενοι being sanctified ἐξ out of ἑνὸς one πάντες· all; δι’ through ἣν which αἰτίαν cause οὐκ not ἐπαισχύνεται he is made ashamed upon ἀδελφοὺς brothers αὐτοὺς them καλεῖν, to be calling, 12 λέγων saying ᾿Απαγγελῶ I shall report back τὸ the ὄνομά name σου of you τοῖς to the ἀδελφοῖς brothers μου, of me, ἐν in μέσῳ midst ἐκκλησίας of ecclesia ὑμνήσω I shall hymn σε· you; 13 καὶ and πάλιν again ᾿Εγὼ I ἔσομαι shall be πεποιθὼς having trusted ἐπ’ upon αὐτῷ· him; καὶ and πάλιν again Ἰδοὺ Look! ἐγὼ I καὶ and τὰ the παιδία little boys ἅ whom μοι to me ἔδωκεν gave ὁ the θεός. 14 ἐπεὶ Since οὖν therefore τὰ the παιδία little boys κεκοινώνηκεν has shared αἵματος of blood καὶ and σαρκός, of flesh, καὶ also αὐτὸς he παραπλησίως in way near beside μετέσχεν he partook τῶν of the αὐτῶν, very (things), ἵνα in order that διὰ through τοῦ the θανάτου death καταργήσῃ he might make ineffective τὸν the (one) τὸ the κράτος might ἔχοντα having τοῦ of the θανάτου, death, τοῦτ’ this ἔστι is τὸν the διάβολον, Devil, 15 καὶ and ἀπαλλάξῃ he might alter off τούτους, these, ὅσοι as many as φόβῳ to fear θανάτου of death διὰ through παντὸς all τοῦ of the ζῇν to be living ἔνοχοι ones held in ἦσαν they were δουλείας. of slavery. 16 οὐ Not γὰρ for δή actually που somewhere ἀγγέλων of angels ἐπιλαμβάνεται, he is taking hold upon, ἀλλὰ but σπέρματος of seed ᾿Αβραὰμ of Abraham ἐπιλαμβάνεται. he is taking hold upon. 17 ὅθεν From which ὤφειλεν he was owing κατὰ according to πάντα all (things) τοῖς to the ἀδελφοῖς brothers ὁμοιωθῆναι, to be made like, ἵνα in order that ἐλεήμων merciful γένηται he might become καὶ and πιστὸς faithful ἀρχιερεὺς chief priest τὰ the (things) πρὸς toward τὸν the θεόν, God, εἰς into τὸ the ἱλάσκεσθαι to be making propitiation for τὰς the ἁμαρτίας sins τοῦ of the λαοῦ· people; 18 ἐν in ᾧ which (thing) γὰρ for πέπονθεν he has suffered αὐτὸς he πειρασθείς, having been tempted, δύναται he is able τοῖς to the (ones) πειραζομένοις being tempted βοηθῆσαι. to aid.

7 Διό, Through which, καθὼς according as λέγει is saying τὸ the πνεῦμα spirit τὸ the ἅγιον holy Σήμερον Today ἐὰν if ever τῆς of the φωνῆς voice αὐτοῦ of him ἀκούσητε, YOU should hear, 8 μὴ not σκληρύνητε YOU should harden τὰς the καρδίας hearts ὑμῶν of YOU ὡς as ἐν in τῷ the παραπικρασμῷ, embitterment, κατὰ according to τὴν the ἡμέραν day τοῦ of the πειρασμοῦ testing ἐν in τῇ the ἐρήμῳ, wilderness, 9 οὗ where ἐπείρασαν tested οἱ the πατέρες fathers ὑμῶν of YOU ἐν in δοκιμασίᾳ proving καὶ and εἶδον they saw τὰ the ἔργα works μου of me τεσσεράκοντα forty ἔτη· years; 10 διὸ through which προσώχθισα I became disgusted toward τῇ to the γενεᾷ generation ταύτῃ this καὶ and εἶπον I said ᾿Αεὶ Ever πλανῶνται they make selves err τῇ to the καρδίᾳ· heart; αὐτοὶ they δὲ but οὐκ not ἔγνωσαν they knew τὰς the ὁδούς ways μου· of me; 11 ὡς as ὤμοσα I swore ἐν in τῇ the ὀργῇ wrath μου of me Εἰ If εἰσελεύσονται they will enter εἰς into τὴν the κατάπαυσίν ceasing down μου. of me.

12 βλέπετε, Be YOU looking at, ἀδελφοί, brothers, μή not ποτε sometime ἔσται will be ἔν in τινι anyone ὑμῶν of YOU καρδία heart πονηρὰ wicked ἀπιστίας of unbelief ἐν in τῷ the ἀποστῆναι to stand off ἀπὸ from θεοῦ God ζῶντος, living, 13 ἀλλὰ but παρακαλεῖτε be YOU encouraging ἑαυτοὺς selves καθ’ according to ἑκάστην each ἡμέραν, day, ἄχρις until οὗ which [time] τὸ the Σήμερον Today καλεῖται, it is being called, ἵνα in order that μὴ not σκληρυνθῇ might be hardened τις anyone ἐξ out of ὑμῶν YOU ἀπάτῃ to seduction τῆς of the ἁμαρτίας· sin; 14 μέτοχοι partakers γὰρ for τοῦ of the χριστοῦ Christ γεγόναμεν, we have become, ἐάνπερ if ever indeed τὴν the ἀρχὴν beginning τῆς of the ὑποστάσεως sub-standing μέχρι until τέλους end βεβαίαν stable κατάσχωμεν· we should hold down; 15 ἐν in τῷ the λέγεσθαι, to be being said, Σήμερον Today ἐὰν if ever τῆς of the φωνῆς voice αὐτοῦ of him ἀκούσητε, YOU should hear, μὴ not σκληρύνητε be YOU hardening τὰς the καρδίας hearts ὑμῶν of YOU ὡς as ἐν in τῷ the παραπικρασμῷ. embitterment.

16 τίνες Which ones γὰρ for ἀκούσαντες having heard παρεπίκραναν; they caused embitterment? ἀλλ’ But οὐ not πάντες all οἱ the (ones) ἐξελθόντες having gone forth ἐξ out of Αἰγύπτου Egypt διὰ through Μωυσέως; Moses? 17 τίσιν To which (ones) δὲ but προσώχθισεν he became disgusted toward τεσσεράκοντα forty ἔτη; years? οὐχὶ Not τοῖς to the (ones) ἁμαρτήσασιν, having sinned, ὧν of whom τὰ the κῶλα carcasses ἔπεσεν fell ἐν in τῇ the ἐρήμῳ; wilderness? 18 τίσιν To which (ones) δὲ but ὤμοσεν he swore μὴ not εἰσελεύσεσθαι to enter futurely εἰς into τὴν the κατάπαυσιν ceasing down αὐτοῦ of him εἰ if μὴ not τοῖς to the (ones) ἀπειθήσασιν; having disobeyed? 19 καὶ And βλέπομεν we are looking at ὅτι that οὐκ not ἠδυνήθησαν they were able εἰσελθεῖν to enter δι’ through ἀπιστίαν. unbelief.

4 Φοβηθῶμεν We should fear οὖν therefore μή not ποτε sometime καταλειπομένης being left down ἐπαγγελίας of promise εἰσελθεῖν to enter εἰς into τὴν the κατάπαυσιν ceasing down αὐτοῦ of him δοκῇ may seem τις someone ἐξ out of ὑμῶν YOU ὑστερηκέναι· to have come behind; 2 καὶ and γάρ for ἐσμεν we are εὐηγγελισμένοι having been brought good news καθάπερ according to which (things) κἀκεῖνοι, even also those, ἀλλ’ but οὐκ not ὠφέλησεν benefited ὁ the λόγος word τῆς of the ἀκοῆς hearing ἐκείνους, those (ones), μὴ not συνκεκερασμένους (ones) having been mixed τῇ to the πίστει faith τοῖς to the (ones) ἀκούσασιν. having heard. 3 Εἰσερχόμεθα We are entering γὰρ for εἰς into τὴν the κατάπαυσιν ceasing down οἱ the (ones) πιστεύσαντες, having believed, καθὼς according as εἴρηκεν he has said Ὡς As ὤμοσα I swore ἐν in τῇ the ὀργῇ wrath μου of me Εἰ If εἰσελεύσονται they will enter εἰς into τὴν the κατάπαυσίν ceasing down μου, of me, καίτοι although τῶν of the ἔργων works ἀπὸ from καταβολῆς throwing down κόσμου of world γενηθέντων, of (ones) having come to be, 4 εἴρηκεν he has said γάρ for που somewhere περὶ about τῆς the ἑβδόμης seventh [day] οὕτως thus Καὶ And κατέπαυσεν ceased down ὁ the θεὸς God ἐν in τῇ the ἡμέρᾳ day τῇ the ἑβδόμῃ seventh ἀπὸ from πάντων all τῶν the ἔργων works αὐτοῦ, of him, 5 καὶ and ἐν in τούτῳ this πάλιν again Εἰ If εἰσελεύσονται they will enter εἰς into τὴν the κατάπαυσίν ceasing down μου. of me.

6 ἐπεὶ Since οὖν therefore ἀπολείπεται it is being left off τινὰς some (ones) εἰσελθεῖν to enter εἰς into αὐτήν, it, καὶ and οἱ the (ones) πρότερον formerly εὐαγγελισθέντες having been brought good news οὐκ not εἰσῆλθον they entered δι’ through ἀπείθειαν, disobedience, 7 πάλιν again τινὰ some ὁρίζει he is defining ἡμέραν, day, Σήμερον, Today, ἐν in Δαυεὶδ David λέγων saying μετὰ after τοσοῦτον so much χρόνον, time, καθὼς according as προείρηται, it has been said before, Σήμερον Today ἐὰν if ever τῆς of the φωνῆς voice αὐτοῦ of him ἀκούσητε, YOU should hear, μὴ not σκληρύνητε YOU may harden τὰς the καρδίας hearts ὑμῶν· of YOU; 8 εἰ if γὰρ for αὐτοὺς them Ἰησοῦς Jesus κατέπαυσεν, made cease down, οὐκ not ἂν likely περὶ about ἄλλης another ἐλάλει he was speaking μετὰ after ταῦτα these (things) ἡμέρας. of day. 9 ἄρα Really ἀπολείπεται is being left off σαββατισμὸς sabbathing τῷ to the λαῷ people τοῦ of the θεοῦ· God; 10 ὁ the (one) γὰρ for εἰσελθὼν having entered εἰς into τὴν the κατάπαυσιν ceasing down αὐτοῦ of him καὶ also αὐτὸς he κατέπαυσεν ceased down ἀπὸ from τῶν the ἔργων works αὐτοῦ of him ὥσπερ as-even ἀπὸ from τῶν the ἰδίων own (ones) ὁ the θεός. 11 Σπουδάσωμεν We should speed up οὖν therefore εἰσελθεῖν to enter εἰς into ἐκείνην that τὴν the κατάπαυσιν, ceasing down, ἵνα in order that μὴ not ἐν in τῷ the αὐτῷ very τις anyone ὑποδείγματι example πέσῃ he should fall τῆς of the ἀπειθείας. disobedience. 12 Ζῶν Living γὰρ for ὁ the λόγος word τοῦ of the θεοῦ God καὶ and ἐνεργὴς energetic καὶ and τομώτερος sharper ὑπὲρ over πᾶσαν every μάχαιραν sword δίστομον two-mouthed καὶ and διικνούμενος going through ἄχρι as far as μερισμοῦ parting ψυχῆς of soul καὶ and πνεύματος, of spirit, ἁρμῶν of joints τε and καὶ and μυελῶν, of marrows, καὶ and κριτικὸς judger ἐνθυμήσεων of thoughts καὶ and ἐννοιῶν of mental inclinations καρδίας· of heart; 13 καὶ and οὐκ not ἔστιν is κτίσις creation ἀφανὴς unapparent ἐνώπιον in sight αὐτοῦ, of him, πάντα all (things) δὲ but γυμνὰ naked καὶ and τετραχηλισμένα having been laid open τοῖς to the ὀφθαλμοῖς eyes αὐτοῦ, of him, πρὸς toward ὃν whom ἡμῖν to us ὁ the λόγος. word.

14 Ἔχοντες Having οὖν therefore ἀρχιερέα chief priest μέγαν great διεληλυθότα having gone through τοὺς the οὐρανούς, heavens, Ἰησοῦν Jesus τὸν the υἱὸν Son τοῦ of the θεοῦ, God, κρατῶμεν we may take hold τῆς of the ὁμολογίας· confession; 15 οὐ not γὰρ for ἔχομεν we are having ἀρχιερέα chief priest μὴ not δυνάμενον being able συνπαθῆσαι to sympathize ταῖς to the ἀσθενείαις weaknesses ἡμῶν, of us, πεπειρασμένον having been tested δὲ but κατὰ according to πάντα all (things) καθ’ according to ὁμοιότητα likeness χωρὶς apart from ἁμαρτίας. sin. 16 προσερχώμεθα We may come toward οὖν therefore μετὰ with παρρησίας outspokenness τῷ to the θρόνῳ throne τῆς of the χάριτος, undeserved kindness, ἵνα in order that λάβωμεν we might receive ἔλεος mercy καὶ and χάριν undeserved kindness εὕρωμεν we might find εἰς into εὔκαιρον well-timely βοήθειαν. aid.
